Expert Roundtable Discussion “The Future of ASEAN: In the Post Indonesia Chairmanship”

Indonesia had finished its ASEAN’s Chairmanship in 2011, however it has the obligation to keep ASEAN on the right growing momentum because as the implementation of ASEAN Community is approaching in 2015, Indonesia with the rest of ASEAN members have to assure that ASEAN will be a people-centered regional organization, to bring more benefits to the society. ASEAN also has the obligtion to play more actively in the global community of nations.

Konrad Adenauer Stiftung (KAS), Centre for Political Studies-Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), and Indonesian Political Science Association (AIPI) were discussing that issue in their collaborating event in a form of Expert Roundtable Discussion titled “The Future of ASEAN: In the Post Indonesia Chairmanship” held in Novotel Bogor, June 28-29 2012. There were the main three objectives discussed: drawing a comprehensive evaluation of Indonesian’s Chairmanship of ASEAN, discussing the progress of ASEAN in its three main pillars and to anticipate any obstacle and difficulty to achieve the formation of the ASEAN Community in 2015 and proposing policy recommendations for the planners and decisions-makers in Indonesia regarding the post chairmanship of Indonesia in ASEAN.

Giving opening remarks were Head of Centre for Political Studies-LIPI, Prof. Dr. Syamsuddin Haris; Konrad Adenauer Stiftung Representative for Indonesia and Timor Leste, Dr. Jan Woischnik; and Vice Chairman of AIPI, Prof. Dr. Ikrar Nusa Bhakti. It was followed by keynote speech from Director General ASEAN, Amb. I Gusti Agung Wesaka Puja.

The roundtable discussion conducted in three sessions of plenary discussion. Session I is about ASEAN Political Security Community. The trigger speaker of this session is Dr. Edy Prasetyono (Vice-Dean, Faculty of Social and Political Science, University of Indonesia), Amb. Nadjib Riphat Koesuma (Deputy Foreign Policy, Coordinating Ministry for Political, Legal and Security Affairs) as commentator, and the facilitator is Dr. Jan Woischnik (KAS). Session II is about ASEAN Economic Community with Thomas Darmawan (Indonesian Chamber of Commerce and Industry/KADIN) as trigger speaker. The commentator of this session is Dr. Zamroni (Senior Researcher of Center for Economic Research-LIPI) and the facilitator is Prof. Dr. Ikrar Nusa Bhakti (AIPI). Session III is about ASEAN Socio-Cultural Community. The trigger speaker of this session is Poengky Indarti, MA (Executive Director of The Indonesian Human Rights Monitor/IMPARSIAL). Dr. Dinna Wisnu (University of Paramadina) is the commentator of this last session and Dr. Riefqi Muna (Head of Research and Development Central Board Muhammadiyah) as facilitator.

With its comprehensive agenda, the participants for the discussion, came from various background, dean from university (Alexius Djemadu-Pelita Harapan University), expert from government institutions (Abdul Rivai Rais-Ministry of Defence), fellow researchers (Alexandra Retno Wulan/CSIS and Kusnanto Anggoro), and researchers from LIPI. The discussion itself held with remarkable result as all the participants actively adding their thoughts and ideas on three-part discussion based on each pillars of ASEAN, Political Security, Economy, and Socio-Culture.

The output of the discussion had undergone an intense group discussion resulting on a Comprehensive Result drafted by Dr. Adriana Elisabeth, Ratna Shofi Inayati, MBA, M. Dr. Riefqi Muna, Tri Nuke Pudjiastuti, MA, Dr. CPF Luhulima, Agus Syarip Hidayat, MA, and Dr. Jan Woischnik. The two main points of the Comprehensive Result are the solutions to resolve problems within the three pillars of ASEAN and several recommendations on how ASEAN can build a strong regional architecture with deep values rooted on each members and wide partnership with its global neighbours.
